FREELAND - Coming off a huge win over undefeated Portland, Lansing Catholic headed North to take on the undefeated Freeland Falcons.
Freeland started the game masterfully on both sides of the ball, stopping Catholic on their first possession and knocking in a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. After a quick stop by the Falcon defense, they drove down the field and scored their first touchdown, bringing their lead to 10-0 with time to spare in the first quarter.
Catholic finally found some life and scored their first touchdown, but the PAT was blocked leaving the score at 10-6 in Freeland's favor going into halftime.
After the break, it was a different game entirely. The Catholic defense quickly dispatched the Falcons offense after a quick three and out. Tony Poljan then rumbled in for the teams second touchdown, but their second PAT was blocked as well. 12-10 in Lansing's favor.
Freeland, wasted no time responding and made the staunch Cougar defense pay for giving them a crease to run through. Giving the Falcons a 16-12 lead to start the 4th quarter after a 3rd blocked PAT.
Just outside of the 10 minute mark, Poljan found paydirt for his second rushing touchdown of the evening. This would have won the game but true to form, this was far from over. Catholic leads 18-16.
Then, Michael Korrey who had already had a stellar game, scooped up a fumble and returned it untouched 50 yards to ice the game in the closing minutes. Freeland ended up scoring once more and had a chance to win with a field goal, but Tony Poljan blocked the field goal and recovered the onside kick to win the game 25-22.
