MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the October 26th Planning Commission meeting, a rezoning request to rezone Mike McCurdy's property from a Single Family Low Density to a Rural Residential to allow goats at his residence was the topic of discussion once again.
Instead of rezoning the property, some members thought requesting a Special Use Permit would be better than trying to rezone the residence.
"I think in this issue the question is more of a non conforming use, using the property for farming purposes when it's already zoned residential low density. The Township Board wanted to allow this kind of use in this zoning district they could've done that. I think that'd be the proper form to allow this use rather than rezoning the property," said Planning Commission member, Dante Ianni.
Since the Commission had not come to an agreement at their last meeting, the members decided they needed to come to an consensus in order to move forward. Majority of the members were hesitant to support the matter because of non conforming lots surrounding the area.
Although the Commission voted to deny the rezoning request, they believe there are other solutions. Next, the McCurdy case will go before the Township Board.
