EAST LANSING - Coming off a three-match winning streak, Michigan State volleyball played host to AP's No. 6 Ohio State on Wednesday night and kept the magic going. One, two, three, the Spartans swept the Buckeyes at Jenison Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Alyssa Garvelink led the way for MSU with a match-best 10 kills. Garvelink, with a career-high two service aces, managed two blocks on the defensive side of the ball.
Junior Allyssah Fitterer played second fiddle to Garvelink in kills but led the way in a hotly-contested third set with five of her nine coming to close this one out.
Saturday night the competition only got tougher as No. 5 Penn State entered the Fieldhouse. This time the Spartans were blown away by the broom, dropping three sets to zero.
The Nittany Lions capitalized on early leads in all three sets. An, 8-0, start to the first, a, 6-0, shutout to the second and a, 13-3, stumbling to the third, and the Spartans found themselves in holes their tall selves just could not climb out of.
Garvelink, again, led the Spartans in kills, this time, with nine.
Junior Chloe Reinig was the star, defensively with five blocks.
MSU (14-7) plays its next four matches on the road. The first comes in Champaign as the team travels south to face Illinois (13-8). Serves up Devil's Night, this Friday, at 8 P.M. (EST).
