LANSING - A Michigan lawmaker proposed to protect kids from the smoking. State Rep. Sam Singh (D) for the 69th District introduced the bill of "prohibiting smoking in vehicle with minors inside" in legislature in June.

He introduced this bill to protect young children's health and their aging processes, since second-hands smoking is significantly harmful for young children's body even though with the car window rolled down.

The bill already had a lot of people talking, and there are strong pros and cons about the bill, but its sponsor, Singh, says that the bill is still in progress. He intends to have a debate and a hearing with testimonies and doctors to talk about the impacts and health risks that young children gets by second-hands smoking.

"And also share with them the additional information that I've got from other states are actually doing this, and where it's been successful, so my hope is that we will have hearing and if it doesn't happen this fall, we will continue to push for it next year," said Singh.

This bill would be a civil infraction, with a fine of $500, and in the first year following implementation, the drivers would only get a warning.
