HASLETT - Known to be mans best friend, therapy dogs in Haslett give a listening ear once a month at the Haslett Library to be a reading partner as kids practice reading out loud.

During the program, kids get 10 minuets with each dog. If no one is waiting in line, they can read to the dog as long as they wish.

In Haslett, there are three owners of Therapy Dogs International (TDI) who have their furry friend participate in the program.

"Reading to dogs is a very simple but effective program for new readers and struggling readers maybe reluctant readers," said Head Librarian, Ann Chapman.

The more kids practice reading out loud, their confidence rises allowing them to stay on the road to success.

"Mostly the dogs are great listeners and those things are just so important to those new readers. When children read to a dog they start to get a really positive view of reading and they keep coming back," said Chapman.

The next Kids Reading to Dogs program is on November 12 from 4-5 pm at the Haslett Library. Ages 6 and up may attend.
