OKEMOS - It's been a big year for the Okemos Athletic Department and the school as whole. Spearheaded by Ira Childress, the school has seen a number of new improvements to and around the school.
Last May, the plans for the 2,000 square foot addition was approved and the funds for the project will be paid through the "building and site sinking fund". That fund includes almost 5 million dollars in renovations to two different buildings on the schools campus.
The Millage that funded the project was last renewed in 2011 and will remain as the current template for another 10 years. Bringing in around 1.2 million dollars annually from taxpayers, the millage takes roughly $100 dollars for the owner of a home valued at $100,000.
On top of the weight room addition, Okemos resurfaced the track which has already lead to less injuries and more events being booked at the premier high school.
Also, Okemos added four new scoreboards through a community approved tech bond, and the board has approved replacement of the school's auxiliary gym.
