HASLETT - Haslett boys soccer played host to the Dewitt Panthers Sept. 29 for a homecoming week matchup.
The game started off with Haslett in control, scoring 2 goals in the first half, the first from Joe Starkia with 22:30 left in the half, and the second goal came from Gabriel Millian with 8:36 left in the half
Haslett had the 2-0 lead but with just over a minute left in the first half, Dewitt found the scoreboard. Senior Garrett Hendershot knocked it in to make it 2-1 at the half.
The only goal in the second half was scored by Dewitt sophomore Evan Greisinger, who tied it up at 2 and took it to overtime. Two 10 minute periods, with no sudden death
Each team scored 2 goals in overtime, but with under four minutes remaining in overtime, with the game tied at 4, Haslett got a corner kick. The sun had set and the field had no lights, it was the junior Viking Lou Sheaffer who saw the ball through the darkness, and redirected it in the net with a beautiful header. That would be the game winner as haslett takes an absolute thriller of a win, 5-4. Haslett head coach Darus Ward insisted that all of his seniors join him in the postgame interview.
“To be coaching these guys, I mean, is a true privilege," said Ward. "Every day we come to work, we work as a family and these guys have been awesome. It’s gonna be sad to let these guys go, but i'm happy because tonight, they're going home happy.”
That was the last home game of the season for Haslett, as playoffs start on Oct. 6.
