HASLETT - Two weeks into the high school football season, and the Haslett Vikings are already half way to their total win mark of last season.

After beating Chippewa Hills on the road, 17-0, the Vikings hosted their home opener Thursday night against Flushing.

An hour and a half thunder and lightning delay may have drained some of Haslett's edge early on. After giving up a couple of quick touchdowns, Haslett shut out the Raiders in the second half en route to a, 13-12, victory.

"I was really proud of our defense," Haslett head coach Charlie Otlewski said after the game. "There is always going to be adversity, whetether its the first part of the game or the second half, and our defense obviously wasn't playing really well early. Boy, they really responded."

A blocked extra point and a failed 2-pt conversion attempt kept an early Flushing lead to just five points, allowing Haslett kicker Luke Ezzo to be a hero in this one. His two field goals gave the Viking defense all it would need to pull off the comeback.

Next weekend, Haslett goes back to playing under the Friday night lights as they stay home once again to take on Owosso at 7pm. Unlike the Vikings, Owosso has started its season, 0-2, losing its first two games by a combine score of 89-21.

The Haslett faithful are reminded that this season the Vikings travel for all but three games, playing their final home game on October 2 against DeWitt.
