Local Drainage Pond Repairs Up For
Discussion

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the Township Board meeting on August 4, Representatives of The Ponds Cooperative Homes, Inc. were back again to discuss Daniel's Drain system. It was first brought to the Board's attention during the June 21st meeting.

Board member Trustee Veenstra said, "it is very important to talk to the residents living in the apartment located next to the pond, we need to hear their opinion's and how they feel about renovations to the pond."

The pond isn't very appealing to the environment as a whole. The pond has been contaminated with phosphorus and chlorides, and has suffered from a large amount of sediment build-up due to the system being installed over 40 years ago.

To repair the drainage system in the pond, the Township Board must file a Chapter 20 Drain Petition with the Michigan Drain Commission.

"We'll piggy back on the the drain code that will allow us to hold public hearings that will provide an avenue for this board to pass those assessments on to those who would benefits from these improvements," said the Assistant Township Manager/Director of Public Works & Engineering, Derek Perry.

On August 4tgh the board didn't get any further with the discussion of the pond project. There wasn't enough background information to solidify the project. It will be discussed at the next Township Board meeting.
