MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers, and sometimes those excessive showers can lead to flooding. It's always smart to have a plan in place in case your home does experience flooding. Here are a few tips to keep your home safe and prepared for flood season:
Citizens are encouraged to purchase flood insurance on their home. Typical homeowners insurance does not usually cover these damages.
Keep important documents in waterproof containers, and preferably keep them on upper level floors.
Learn how to safely turn off gas and electric lines in your home.
Double check sump pumps to ensure they work correctly.
Besides damage to your home, flooding can also affect your driving and safety when out and about.
"Six inches of water is all it takes, especially if it's moving water, six inches of fast moving water can knock you off your feet easily. Two feet of water will move your car. That's why we always tell people to turn around, don't drown, we never want to see people drive through flooded areas," said Meridian Township Fire Inspector Tavis Millerov.
