HASLETT - Haslett's 1-3-1 zone defense will adjust to no one. The Vikings starters, one-through-five, run around the court in a formulated frenzy that can confuse and slow down even the strongest of offenses.

In a classic battle of star-power vs. team basketball, the united Vikings (22-5) controlled this one from the second quarter on, finishing with their first bid to a state title in school history.

Benton Harbor loved to run the ball up the court with their star athletes, but it was Haslett who controlled the tempo and destroyed the Tigers at their own game, 63-52, forcing turnovers and missed shots, then, scoring on the fast break.

"That 1-3-1 is our main, key defense that we go into, and I know it frustrates teams a lot," Haslett forward Karson Tripp said after the game. "I think when we stay in that, that is when we get our run."

Senior forward Makenna Ott stood out on the scoring front and fast break for Haslett with a team-leading 18 points and 6 rebounds.

Benton Harbor came into Friday night with two players named to the Associated Press Class B All-State basketball team.

Sisters, Michigan State signee Kalabrya Gondrezick and Kysre Gondrezick, along with head coach Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick, formed a family-fun, high-powered offense; however, Haslett's starting lineup just had better chemistry, crisply moved the ball around with decisive power, and again, that defense was just too ferocious for the Tigers.

The Gondrezick sisters combined for 37 points on the night, leaving the rest of the team with the mere extra 15.

Haslett, meanwhile, spread the wealth around, with four players scoring 11 or more.

The Vikings play Detroit Country Day (21-4) for the state title Saturday 6 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
