MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Along with trying to get a fire under control, firefighters also have to endure freezing temperatures during the winter month. One organization has made it a mission to provide shelter to help keep our firefighters warm while they keep us safe.

The Capital Area Transportation Authority, known as CATA, provides public transportation for many including Meridian Township. CATA isn't just responsible for transportation, they also make it a point to give back to the community.

During the Township Board meeting on Tuesday Feb. 3, the Meridian Township Fire Department held a special presentation to show CATA their appreciation for all their help.

"Five degrees standing out there with the winds blowing and nowhere to go to get any shelter other than CATA, who has brought a bus to almost every fire that we've had," said Fire Chief Fred Cowper during the presentation. Cowper spoke about the Fire Department's gratitude while other members of the fire team listened and showed their support.

CATA's CEO and Executive Director Sandy Draggoo and Pastor Rick Stacy from Meridian Christian Church were in attendance to accept their awards of appreciation.
