OKEMOS - The plans to add a apartment complex at the intersection of Okemos and Jolly Roads is slowly, but surely coming together.
The applicants met with the Township Board on Tuesday, Jan. 20 to try and come to an agreement on variances and meet halfway with problems to their proposed plan. No official application has been submitted yet.
"So far we've only seen a concept plan," said Associate Planner Peter Menser. "The concept plan calls for are a variety of one and two bedroom apartments, and some three bedroom apartments. I think it's about 460 units spread about over 35 acres on the corner of there."
The complex also calls for commercial businesses in the area, something that Menser believes should be tailored to the demographics of those looking to lease the apartments.
A concern brought up during the Planning Commission was that the Township already high amount of traffic at Jolly and Okemos Roads. A large volume of commercial businesses at the corner combined with the I-96 interstate causes problems on a daily basis. Many on the Commission believes a 500+ unit apartment complex bordering the chaos would only magnify the claustrophobic situation.
Thoughts were brought up to add another road cutting through the complex. No official document offering variances or approval has been submitted, but the Township Board expects to see the applicant again in the coming weeks.
