MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The old Central Fire Station at 2150 Clinton Street was closed down earlier this year due to poor conditions, however the Township is looking for ways to make use of this property by rezoning.
Meridian Township Associate Planner Peter Menser presented at the October 27th Planning Commission meeting about the rezoning.
Currently, the lot is home to both the old Central Fire Station and a business called “The Marc”. While The Marc and the surrounding property is listed as commercial, the fire station is still residential. The proposal was to rezone the fire station, making the entire area commercial zoning.
“So we’re thinking if we’re in a position that we’re going to sell this property, or whether we develop it or sell it to a developer or just sell it outright, that it all being commercial zoning would be ideal,” Menser said.
Many issues regarding the rezoning were brought up at the meeting by residents included increased levels of traffic and pollution and the future of a tree located on the property. If the rezoning were to pass and the property was listed for sale, there is no knowledge on what business might move in.
The Planning Commission will discuss this topic again at their next meeting on November 10th, and then will make a recommendation to the Township Board.
