HASLETT - The Haslett Vikings have had their share of ups and down this season, from a beatdown by Dewitt to a last second nail biter against Lansing Waverly.

Friday's (Oct. 10) game against Mason was no different. The Mason Bulldogs started early and finished strong, shutting down the air attack of Haslett and escaping with a 21-14 victory.

The big fullback Mykal Stinson put Haslett on the board in the second quarter. Stinson helped fuel an eight play, 63-yard drive, finishing it with a two-yard run to tie the game at seven.

The tide seemed to shift in the VIkings' favor late in the third quarter. Alec Dunckel blocked a punt and Mike Zsigo returned it all the way to the Mason 10. Haslett failed to punch the ball in with Stinson in three plays, setting up a fourth and goal from the two. Coach Charlie Otlewski made an interesting decision with the game tied at seven, and elected to try for a touchdown rather than a near free three points.

The gamble failed. Stinson was finally slowed down as Mason took over on downs with the game still tied. The Bulldogs would capitalize on the error in judgement, driving down the field to take a 14-7 lead.

Miscues also plagued the Vikings. A fumble with 10:19 led to another Mason touchdown drive. Hunter Holbrook punched the ball in for his second touchdown of the game, effectively putting the game away for the Bulldogs. Mason would score on a 44-yard pass to Brandon Allen, but it would be too little too late.

With the loss, the Haslett team falls to 3-4 on the season, and 2-3 in division play.
