MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Police Department works very closely with nearby schools in order to prepare for situations such as a potential active shooter in the school.

There are two resources officers that work for both Haslett and Okemos schools that provide security in any event that this could happen. The police department has reviewed certain active shooter procedures and looked at other safety measures that they can implement in both districts.

The police department works with the schools to arrange situations in which they can train in the actual facility so that if the situation were to arise, they would be fully prepared with their surroundings. The police department trains for these types of situations on an annual basis.

Each school has a plan set in place to be prepared for this situation if it were to ever happen. Schools are required to practice 'lock down" drills, in order to maintain safety protocol.

Lieutenant Greg Frenger said the FBI has been ramping up their involvement in active shooter situations as far as providing information on how things are being done and what that means for police officers in the field. They relay information such as what they are typically gong to see, what certain patterns have been, etc.

"It is a dynamic situation. You can't just assume every situation is going to meet a certain criteria or pattern," said Lieutenant Frenger.
