MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township officials recently released that the Central Fire Station located on Clinton Street will be ceasing operations due to the deterioration of the building worsening daily.

Water damage, flooding, and mold have led to health risks to personnel including safety concerns for the firefighters working in the building.

“The mold and falling ceiling tiles are a huge concern for us and we need to make sure our firefighters work in a safe environment. These conditions are worsening and putting our men and women at risk causing us to close operations,” said Fred Cowper, Meridian Township EMS/Fire Chief.

Essential equipment has already been removed from the building to avoid further damage due to continual leaks in the ceiling.

A press conference has been scheduled for Thursday, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Fire Station. Township Manager Frank Walsh and EMS/Fire Chief Fred Cowper are expected to address response times and staffing levels, equipment damage and storage, and public
safety. Media will be given a tour of the facility.
