UPDATE: LANSING - David Ungaar comes every year to the 9/11 memorial service in downtown Lansing.

The New York native will never forget that day.

"There were 13 young men in my apartment complex who died who were fire fighters. I knew half a dozen people who worked around the trade center who didn't make it out from different buildings," said Ungaar.

He can recall the World Trade Center before the attacks.

"I watched the towers get built by a teenager. And I remember the outcry in the beginning they were big tall and ugly they didn't look like a traditional building. But they became such a part of New York's personality," said Ungaar.

The event was put on the by the Lansing Fire Department to pay tribute to those who were lost on that fatal day.

"We start with a procession, with rank and file uniform police officers and fire fighters, said Steve Babcock, firefighter. "We'll open this morning with a rendition of the star spangle banner,"

"Its important that we never forget, not only the actions of that day but that actions that have affected us all over the last 10 years," said Babcock.
