UPDATE:
HASLETT - Haslett Road between Park Lake and Marsh Road is going to be reconstructed. This project was discussed this week.
Gerald Richards, Meridian Township Manager said, "The board discussed that and in the end decided to contribute 33,000 dollars from the pathway fund, the pedestrian bicycle pathway millage fund and 77,000 dollars from the general fund."
This project totaling over 300,000 dollars is not all coming from the township. 80 percent of it is being funded from federal and state monies and the other 20 percent from local funds.
So, the money from the pathway fund isn't being used for sidewalks right now, but it is making it possible for a sidewalk to be laid down in the future.
Richards said, "The project will be very good for the future installation of pathway there. It will expedite that completion of that section."
But not everyone agreed with using the pathway fund for roads.
Elizabeth Legoff, Meridian Township Board Trustee said,"It's a lot of money at this time, and I'm sympathetic with the Road Commission. But I think it is a bad path for the township to go down."
While some people think using money from other funds is a slippery slope, Richards says roads are a high priority.
Construction will begin in late August and should be completed by November.
