MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - April is National Safe Digging Awareness Month.
What this means is April is dedicated to raising awareness of how to reduce underground utility damages.
This effort is enforced by Miss Dig 811 Inc., Consumers energy, DTE Energy, Semco Energy, TransCanada Pipeline, and the Michigan Public Service Commission.
Together these corporations work to emphasize the importance of following safe digging procedures vital for safe completion.
April is the chosen month to spread awareness because this is the month where the Spring weather inspires residents to start digging projects.
The number one reason for digging accidents is failure to contact Miss Dig 811, or visit their website, to find out where underground utilities are located.
Damages to underground utilities cause many problems including service interruption, damage to the environment, or personal injury, even death.
Along with the problems brought to residents, this also creates more excavating projects and construction for Miss Dig 811.
This group works year round to ensure people have the proper knowledge on procedure before they begin digging.
The biggest tip this group gives to residents for safe digging is to call Miss Dig 811 at 811 three days prior to starting your digging project. This allows for utility markers to be made and small dugouts will be made within four feet of marks to securely protect underground utilities.
