MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - By way of a 6-0 vote, the Meridian Township Board passed a motion to approve the renewal of a contract agreement between the Township and Williamston Township to provide police services to Williamston Township.

The current contract between the two parties is set to expire December 31st, 2021, while the new agreement is set to run through December 31 of 2024.

Currently, Meridian Township Police Department officers offer Williamston Township 80 hours of law enforcement per week, but under the new contract, coverage will be lessened to 40 hours per week.

Ken Plaga, Meridian Township Chief of Police, was on hand at the meeting:

“It’s been a great relationship thus far, and we are happy to continue provide service to the level that we can without impacting service here in the Township,” Plaga said about the new contract.

As a result, Williamston Township will compensate Meridian Township $146,056.06 for calendar year 2023 and $150,437.74 for calendar year 2024 for the police services. There is also language in the contract that allows for flexibility in the amount of law enforcement hours, including a possible return to the 80 hours that were provided in the current deal.
