INGHAM COUNTY - According to Centers Of Disease Control and Prevention in 2011 more than 2,000 teens were killed in car crashes.

Driving is one of the leading causes of preventable death and distracted driving causes most crashes.

Jason Redoutey Mr.R's Driving School President says, "I say put your phone on a mode where you don't know you're being contacted. so that stimulant is never introduced in the first place."

When it comes to teen drivers parents are their biggest influence.

"If you are always in a hurry always frustrated. always talking junk to the other drivers on the road when they mess up your kids catch that," says Redoutey

Repetition is the best teacher.

Redoutey says,"take your kid on campus two hours before game time when there's pedestrians everywhere everyone's drunk there cars parked there's wall to traffic because guess what they're going to have to navigate that by themselves at some point."

Parents and the Michigan Sheriffs Association have be working together to stop teen car crashes with a program called "STOPPED".

This initiative has decreased teen crashes by 33 percent.

Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says, "it's a voluntary program where the parent will fill out a card and mail it to the Sheriff's Association or they can go online and register."

Parents receive a sticker once they've signed up. You place it on your car and this then gives police the right to stop your car of any reason they feel necessary.

"Who's in the car why are they in the car, why they're where they are," says Wriggelsworth.

The police fill out a card, sent it to the Sheriff's Association, and they then notify the parents

For example.

"Your youngster got stopped at 2 o'clock in the morning in Stockbridge," says Wriggelsworth.

STOPPED has become a growing phenomenon

Redoutey says, "more and more counties were doing it its pretty widely used where you know and kids know if you get pulled over your parents will find out."

The best way to prevent a crash is to follow the law.
