MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the last meeting, the Township Board addressed a few items regarding the Medical Marihuana Ordinance.
The Board found some issues in the proposed ordinance that needed to be evaluated. The Board appointed a committee of 3 members: Trustee Wilson, Clerk Dreyfus, and Trustee Styka to examine the ordinance.
The three members recommended a few changes. One of the changes being a required distance of 1,000 feet between a facility and a K-12 school.
In response to this, Trustee Veenstra suggested to reduce the distance to 500 feet, however, the rest of the board decided that the 1,000 feet was necessary.
The committee met twice with the Meridian Township's attorney and staff as they decided which changes needed to be made.
At the meeting, Meridian Township Trustee, Angela Wilson said, "This really was a compromise, I mean you had three people sitting at the table who had three different very divergent views on what should happen. We came together because we took into factor the discussion by all of our board members, our colleagues, and the discussions that were made by both sides of the argument from our public and we put all of that into consideration and we came up with this."
Apart from a few details, the board have come to a consensus and hope to see this ordinance as an action item at the next meeting.
