MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Governor Rick Snyder signed a law that will change school safety drill requirements.

Starting next year, schools in Michigan will be required to conduct one extra lockdown drill every year.

As a result, the schools will conduct one less fire drill every year.

Schools also must provide documentation of the completed drills on their websites.

Okemos High School Assistant Principal Russ Verrell is pleased with the new law.

"We can't do enough, I think that all schools are doing whatever they can to make sure that their kids are safe, and we are just doing our part with our law enforcement, and we are just trying to be as prepared as possible," said Verrell.

With the new law, ten safety drills be required every year including five fire drills, two tornado drills, and three lockdown drills.
