UPDATE:
OKEMOS, MI - Murphy Elementary School students received hands on fire safety experience on Thursday morning with the help from the Meridian Township Fire Department. Kids in third grade and above were welcomed to participate.
Mark Hornberger, Fire Inspector, aided the students through fire hazard identification and a close-to-real-life fire situation. Items such as lighters, stove-tops, and electrical appliances near water were pointed out by the classes. A fire drill was then instigated by fake theatrical smoke filling an entire room. The students stayed low to the ground, found an open window and jumped out of it.
Two third graders, Declan and Ally, felt that they were well prepared for potential fires after this safety demonstration. They also mentioned that the experience was fun, and that their favorite aspects of the demonstration were jumping out of a window and being in a room full of smoke where it was hard to see.
