MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Presidential Election years usually mean more voters at the polls.

Meridian Township is expecting more voters in the August Primary after a higher than normal voter turnout in the March Primary.

Meridian Township is anticipating up to 40% turnout for the August 2nd Primary Election.

"During the March Presidential Primary we had an enormously high turnout, much much higher than we normally ever see for a Presidential Primary. Based on that we're expecting significantly higher voter turnout both on August 2nd for the Primary and on November 8th for the General Election," said Brett Dreyfus, Meridian Township Clerk.

For the March Presidential Primary Election, Meridian saw a 44% voter turnout. In 2012, the turnout was 21% for the Presidential Primary Election, but in that year Michigan only had one Democratic Presidential candidate on the ballot which resulted in far fewer Democrats showing up to vote at the polls.

The Ingham County Clerk's Office has advised municipalities to anticipate a 100% voter turnout for the August Primary to ensure there is not a ballot shortage.
