OKEMOS - The Okemos Masonic Lodge #252 is amidst it's third year with the "Bikes for Books" program. They've partnered with the Charitable Foundation of the Grand Lodge of Michigan to make all this possible.
The goal of the program is to give 3rd and 4th graders from the Haslett and Okemos area an incentive to read more. And what better incentive is there than a brand new bike and helmet?
The way the program works is through a raffle system. For every 7 books the student reads, they are able to submit a "Bikes for Books" entry form into the raffle. If their name is drawn from the raffle, they win a new bike and helmet! Each of the 6 elementary schools in the Okemos area will have 4 lucky winners.
As of now, more than 160 entry forms have been submitted which means that over 1,100 books have been read by students. Bikes for Books has been rather successful in the past and looks to continue growing and encouraging even more students to keep on reading.
