Park Commission Discusses Park Projects

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - During the October 9th Park Commission meeting, there were several topics discussed including an update on upcoming projects.

The Deer Management Program was discussed. Through the program, eight deer have been harvested this year. There were many safety concerns about this program. LuAnn Maisner, Parks and Recreation Director stated that hunters are assigned particular trees and are to shoot down on deer. Also stated, that most hunting takes place in the early morning or late evening when trails are clear of people. Anyone in the program is required to go through a background check and live in Meridian Township.

Two grants have been received that will be used to work on the design and engineering of the Harris Nature Center, adding a composing trail system and brand new pavilion. Capital Region Community Foundation contributed funds towards this along with a donation from the Harris Center Foundation, that will be partnered with a grant from the Water Conservation Fun and The Park Millage.

Eastgate parking lot has been paved, this lot was muddy and would have to be closed during spring and winter but can now remain open. It will be a great way to access the cross-country ski trails and the nature center from the East side.

Parking lots at North Meridian Road Park and Central Park South have both been expanded. Central Park South for the incoming dog park.

Nancy Moore Park is also working towards fencing and signage for the small dog area.

The final walkthrough of Towner Road Park has been completed, the park will be ready for scheduled activities next year. As of now, bathrooms, walking trail, pickle ball courts and the pavilion are open. The athletic fields will be ready next year and playground equipment is still needed.
