UPDATE: OKEMOS - Technical improvements are about to make their mark at local gas stations.

The Planning Commission met recently to make a decision regarding gas station signs. The meeting went smoothly and approval was granted to allow gas stations to update prices electronically. However, they made sure that was all they would be able to do.

The chair of the Planning Commission, Thomas Deits, had this to say about the restrictions. "We just wanted to make sure they weren't a distraction. For example we didn't want to have scrolling signs of flashing kitty cats and multiple prices and so forth. The only thing that can be electronic on the sign is the actual dollar value of a gallon of gas or diesel or ethanol and nothing else."

In the past, gas prices had to be changed manually but now they can be updated electronically without having to pay a special use permit fee. The Planning Commission felt the fee was unnecessary considering most gas stations are in the process of making the transition to electronic signage.
