MSU Trustees Name Bill Beekman as Interim President
EAST LANSING - MSU Trustees announced Friday that Bill Beekman will serve as the University's Interim President until a replacement is found. This comes in wake of the resignation of Lou Anna K. Simon, amid the Larry Nassar sexual abuse sandal.
Since 2008 Beekman has served as the board's vice president and secretary.
Emotions were high during Friday's meeting as members of the board gave compelling statements about their personal feelings toward Dr. Larry Nassar.
Trustee Mosallam cried as he read a statement directed to Nassar's victims stating, "I'm sorry, we failed you."
Trustee Kelly also seemed to fight back tears as he spoke about watching the testimony from the victims, saying it "forever changed me."
Chairman Breslin mentioned the Attorney General's office will announce an investigation of how the University handled the assaults. That announcement is expected next week.
A number of trustees spoke with the press after the meeting. The biggest question was will any of them resign? None answered yes.
There was also no mention of a timeline for a permanent president, Breslin saying, "soon."
