Officials Remind Motorists to Take Precautions During Winter Storm

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Ingham County until 11 pm on December 13th. Much of Michigan is expected to be blanketed with snow, with the Lansing area expecting to see 5 to 8 inches of snowfall. Officials urge residents to take precautions especially while driving.

Meridian Township Police Captain Greg Frenger said that the biggest issue they see on the roads during a snowstorm, like the one today, is speed.

"The speed limit may be 40 mph, but that is no longer the case if you are driving in bad weather. You must adjust your speed for the conditions," said Frenger.

Frenger added that he couldn't stress enough that drivers should wear their seat belts, leave additional space between vehicles and allow yourself greater stopping distance especially at intersections.

"And if at all possible, cancel your plans and stay off the roads or at least double your travel times," said Frenger.

Meridian Township offices will be closing at 4 pm, additionally Township meetings scheduled for tonight have been canceled.

“Safety of residents and community members is of greatest concern to the Township. Township crews are currently out clearing pathways and Township property as quickly and safely as possible,” said Frank Walsh, Meridian Township Manager.

Both Okemos and Haslett Public Schools have announced early releases and cancellations for all after school and evening activities due to weather.

Drivers are also encouraged to prepare an emergency kit for their car. Ready.gov suggests keeping blankets or sleeping bags, jumper cables, a charged cell phone and car charger, a flashlight with extra batteries and warm clothes in your car in case of an emergency. FEMA also suggests keeping cat litter or sand in your car to help improve traction if you get stuck.
