New Cheer Coach comes to Okemos High School

OKEMOS, MI - "We're the Bomb Diggity" is their motto, meaning amazing and/or confident, and the Okemos Cheer squad is just that. At their practices the girls displayed team work and confidence.

New Cheer Coach LaKeka Pruitt started the season off with some intentions in mind. She says that "I wanted to first heal them as a squad". Pruitt believes that the girls were initially broken and as head coach she had work to do; to help the girls improve in all areas.

The girls and new Cheer Coach Pruitt get along very well. Not only do they really like their new coach, they even wrote her letters and hand-made birthday cards for her this year, expressing their love and gratitude for the coach. Coach Pruitt says that she was so happy when reading the letters that it made her cry, tears of joy that is.

When asked what was her favorite quote she says "Give yourself permission to shoot for something that seems totally beyond your grasp. You may be surprised at your capabilities".

The Okemos Cheer Squad is close-knit. They represent unity and sisterhood. Team Captain Jasmine Rucker says "I feel like I have gained a lot of sisters". Through the "GroupMe" app Coach Pruitt sends the girls encouraging messages every Monday, just in time to start the week off on a positive note.

"A Bomb Diggity Cheer leader is not measured by the height of her jumps but by the span of her spirit".

The Okemos Chiefs football team has one game left this season scheduled on October 20th at 7:30 pm at East Lansing High School.
