GRAND LEDGE, MI - The CAAC-Blue rivalry came to a head Friday, Sept. 22, as the Okemos Chieftains would travel to Grand Ledge to take on the Comets. The last time the Chieftains beat the Comets was 2007.
Both Grand Ledge and Okemos were undefeated in the CAAC-Blue Conference, and the two teams did not disappoint. Early in the first quarter Okemos would take control of the football both offensively and defensively.
The chieftains would start the game with an 80-yard drive, then would continue that momentum with a pick 6 by Brandon Clark who would return the football 45 yards. Grand Ledge would not put any points up on the board until the second quarter with eight minutes left in the half. They would go into halftime tying the game up, 14-14.
The second half both teams would bring out the intensity going back and forth on downs. An extra point attempt by Okemos in the fourth quarter would leave them trailing by one and unable to make up the lost ground.
"Our kids put themselves in spots where they can be successful. When all else fails back on your technique, that's what we did. The defensive line got pushed around a lot in the first half we went back to our principles and thats what worked,"said Grand Ledge Head Football Coach, Matt Bird.
Grand Ledge would score with 3:38 left in the game, and Okemos unable to move the ball would unfortunately have to give the ball over to the Comets. They would take this match up home with a final score of 28-20.
"They will fight and keep grinding their way through, they did a great job on that tonight," said Bird
