EAST LANSING - A motto imprinted on the wall of Essex Salon stating their career is a purpose not a job.

Essex Owner Nancy Karkau proudly reopened her salon in the Hannah Plaza located off Hagadorn Road. On Wednesday, June 28 a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in front of the salon.

Clients, friends and family celebrated with refreshments, giveaways and drawings.

Inside the salon, Karkau marked history on the wall with her grandfathers belongings during his career as a barber.

Karkau began her fascination with hair and beauty at a young age growing up and admiring her grandfather who owned a barber shop.

"Fifty years ago this month I decided to start beauty school," said Karkau.

Karkau decided to go into beauty school in order to provide more services in beauty and relaxation.

"What I didn't expect was my two daughters to go into this business. It was a huge plus for me," said Karkau.

Her business's full of purpose, passion and family members.

"Between my two daughters, granddaughter and I we have about 98 years of experience," said Karkau.

During the ribbon cutting Karkau thanked her clients and staff for their greatness and their support towards the family business.
