MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Mall has been a staple within Meridian Township since it first opened its doors in 1969. The mall had only 50 stores during the time of the grand opening, but that number has now doubled. The mall has become a central spot for residents in the Township and it is a big part of the local economy.
Economic Development Coordinator and Associate Planner Ben Motil said the mall is is one of the biggest commercial properties in the Township with job employment, and that the mall has a huge impact on the community.
"The mall is literally the heart of the commercial core of the Township," said Motil.
Although the mall plays an important role within the Township, there have been many stores that have been forced to close due the to hardships of competition in the industry.
"There's some segments of the industry that have been tougher than some other ones, and being as large as we are we generally have most of the retailers that are struggling. The business is cyclical, we're in a downturn, and I have no doubt it's going to turn around and we'll end up being stronger in the near future," said Todd Huhn, the general manager at the Meridian Mall.
Some Macy's and JC Penney stores are closing all around the country, however this isn't a problem for the Meridian Mall. Both of those stores do well at the mall, according to Huhn.
The mall can't speak publicly about what stores will be opening up in the near future however, they do have plans for future events to occur at the mall to encourage residents to make a visit.
