Humbling Defeat for Okemos Softball Does
Not Diminish a Great Season

UPDATE: OKEMOS -

ORIGINAL STORY: OKEMOS - Okemos softball finally fell, 20-0 to Mattawan, Saturday morning after a miraculous run in the playoffs.

Coach Chrissy Schoonover was a swirl of emotions after the game, proud of her team for fighting so far but understandably upset about the lopsided defeat.

"We knew that it was going to be tough going in," Schoonover said. "They're ranked number four in the state. It's like facing the giants."

Okemos softball played nearly perfectly in their final few games, but faced a team in Mattawan who was on an unstoppable run.

Schoonover said her team understood that going in, but a loss in a late round by a large margin was still hard to swallow.

"We knew what we were going up against, that they were a really good team, and just thought this is another chance to play ball together again," Schoonover said.

Although the final outcome was not a storybook ending, when Okemos stood at 4-10 to start the year, the journey to regionals was one nobody predicted.

"Picking up the pieces when we thought that we had our backs against the wall early," Schoonover said about her memory of the season.
