EAST LANSING - This year over 51,000 fans descended upon Spartan Stadium to check out the new generation of Spartans and say one final farewell to the winningest senior class in school history during MSU Football’s annual Spring Game.

With 43 wins, several positions will need to be replaced since many key members were lost to graduation. The most obvious one being the quarterback position, where Tyler O’Connor, Damion Terry, Brian Lewerke and Mesiah DeWeaver are looking to replace the winningest QB in program history: Connor Cook.

Coming into the Spring Game, O’Connor was considered the leader to start at QB and his performance reaffirmed the stigma around the senior who was voted captain for the game by his teammates. “I played alright, I ran the offense well and put the ball where it needed to be for the most part,” said O’Connor who completed 10 of 16 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. In addition, running for 28 yards on the ground and good decision making showed off his versatility.

The next contestant at QB left the game kicking himself for some of his throws, “I don’t think I did as well as I could, there were a couple of throws that I make all the time that I didn’t hit today,” says Damion Terry who completed six of 12 passes for 70 yards.

Head Coach Mark Dantonio’s lips are still sealed when it comes to the QB’s, “Everybody wants to hear the coach say, ‘He’s the quarterback,’ I’m not going to say, ‘He’s the quarterback’ until we get into a game and we see production from our quarterback. So until we see the production on a consistent level, I’m not going to make the mistake of saying, ‘This guy is it’ and put all the pressure on one guy,” says Dantonio.

The play of the game came at the end of the third quarter when O’Connor drove the Green Team downfield and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to freshman Cam Chambers to bring the score 14 White-9 Green. He finished the play with a two-point conversion to Matt Macksood.

Final: White 14-Green 11.
