LANSING - Some people travel out of town, or even out-of-state for spring break, but, for some local kids, they spent their time at the Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) April 4-8.

CAHS held a spring break camp where all week long children who attended got to do activities related to pet care and cost, as well as enjoy TLC time with cats and dogs. Kids who attended the camp range in ages from 7-14 and the camp coordinated activities geared towards those ages.

Humane Educator Lindsay Daly Post said TLC time between the animals and the children is the most important part of the camp.

"Of course the TLC time with the pets is the most important and the most exciting for them," Daly Post said. "But, you know, we want to do a lot of different types of animal activities that are going to have an educational base as well."

Each year the camp is different and this year's focus was the care and cost of animals.

"This week we've talked about pet care, so our younger groups were researching what kinds of things animals need to be happy and healthy," she said. "Our older student groups actually did the financial aspect of that--so they took the list the younger kids had made and started putting a price a tag, so that we could kind of form an idea of how much it does cost and what the responsibility is of taking a pet home."

In addition to learning about pet care, Daly Post said the bond the children experience with the animals is extremely rewarding for both parties.

"It really is an amazing experience watching the kids and the animals together," she said. "The love that they share, the dedication that these kids have."

Daly Post also said the camp is so popular that some years children from out of state even attend the camp.
