MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A new safety feature has been added at the crosswalk near the Chippewa Middle School on Kinawa Drive.

The power and electric pole for the light was placed by Consumers Energy in December and the yellow flashing beacons were just installed last week, which finally made the new crosswalk fully functional. New pedestrian crossing signs were also put into place.

While driving on Kinawa Drive motorists should yield when they see the yellow beacons flashing.

"The way this flashing beacon works is by pushing the button on the electric pole, and the beacons will start flashing. It's not a stop sign, but it's a warning for the motorized vehicles to yield, that there're pedestrians crossing the street," said Younes Ishraidi, Chief Engineer of Meridian Township.
