Team Effort Gave Haslett's Girls the Win
Over Okemos

HASLETT - On Friday, December 4th the Lady Vikings had their home opener against the Lady Chiefs of Okemos.

Viking fans packed the house and brought energy and support for the girls.

Feeding off that energy was Senior Megan Mewidd who led the team with 16 points in a 64 - 27 victory over Okemos .

"It was our first home game so it was super exciting to have a a win on our home court; it is a confidence builder for the rest of the season," mentions Mewidd.

Coming of the bench it was Senior Shannon Twichell that contributed 12 points giving some momentum to the team.

"On my team I am a defensive specialist where I hit the boards and get as many rebounds and putbacks as I can," said Twichell.

Twichell had 6 of her 12 points in the second half from down low.

For the Chiefs, it was Freshman Guard Laya Hartman who fueled the offense for Okemos scoring the first 8 points for the Lady Chiefs.

And finished the night with 14 points leading the team.

Hartman is an interest of many Division I schools with offers from Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, and some additional schools.

Vikings coach Bob Currier noted that every girl on our bench came out with great intensity and it was a team effort in our win.

"I was pleased with how the girls came out and challenged Okemos' Leader Laya Hartman who is great player," Currier said. "Offensively we are a very unselfish team. We move the ball well and are staring to find team chemistry. All 12 girls were sharing the ball with teammates, diving for loose balls, and hitting the boards. "

Junior Annisa Whims who added 10 points stressed," Coach Currier puts us in the best position to perform based on our individual skills."

"We worked together as a team tonight to get our first home win, and I am excited to only get better as a team."

The Haslett girls finished up as Class B runner- up in the State Finals last winter.

Haslett (2-0) moves on to play Howell Tuesday, December 8th where their game strategy will change to prepare for Howell's leading scorer in the post.
