MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - An event to help rid Meridian Township of an invasive plant species ends this week.

Garlic mustard is an invasive plant that is found all throughout the state.

The Garlic Mustard Challenge was started by the non-profit group called the Stewardship Network several years ago. The Network promotes healthy natural areas in all of Michigan.

The goal of the challenge is to pull as much of garlic mustard and dame's rocket as possible and record it online.

According to Kit Rich, Meridian Township's Senior Park Naturalist and Harris Nature Center Coordinator, the plant can be very detrimental.

After two years of growth, the plant begins to flower. Each flower produces hundreds of seeds. If a seed gets into the soil it can stay there for several years, according to Rich.
