The Rezoning of Ember Oaks Subdivision
Sparks Controversy at Planning
Commission Meeting

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the May 18th Planning Commission meeting, there was a request to amend the PRD sketch plan for the unplatted portions of Ember Oaks subdivision preliminary plat located just north of Jolly Road.

Many concerns came from the public regarding the proposed change to the planned residential development. An increase in traffic flow on Ponderosa and Stagecoach Drive and the reduction of lot sizes were among the main concerns.

The intersection at Jolly Road was moved closer to the already constricted hill towards Celeste Park Drive worrying some residents of a busy, and possibly dangerous turn with limited sight distance into traffic in their morning commute.

"This change will make it more restricted on there and I'm afraid that's going to be a dangerous intersection to get out of in the morning if you're going towards Williamston because cars are Jolly Road are fifty-five miles per hour and they're driving that most of the time," said Gary Mitchell, an Okemos resident.

Although the current plan meets the ordinance, the location of garages, house sizes, and materials and utilities are all items the Planning Commission could not address.

The Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the Township Board in regards to the next step.
