Haslett and Okemos Public Schools
Awarded School Safety Grants

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Michigan State Police recently announced that several school districts and sheriff's departments were awarded $4 million to improve the safety and security of school buildings.

56 public schools, including Haslett and Okemos Public Schools, 15 private schools, and 11 charter schools are set to receive 80% of the grant money. The remaining 20% will go to five sheriff's departments across the state.

“The safety of our students and educators is of paramount importance,” Michigan State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue stated in a press release. “This Competitive School Safety Grant Program will help schools to make improvements that will provide a safer and more secure learning environment.”

289 applications were received, and the review committee prioritized proposals that would secure access points at school buildings. The Michigan State Police said this is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to improve school security.
