EAST LANSING - Michigan State football players take in loads of calories, proteins, fats to keep their weight up. How do they do this while staying healthy?

When it comes to nutrition, MSU prefers the food only method.

"We prefer not to use supplements if possible," Nogle said. "Probably the biggest supplement would be to try to get them to eat fruits and vegetables."

"If they would eat the right food, they would be fine."

MSU Director of Sports Medicine and Performance Dr. Jeffery Kovan knows that eating right is a valiant effort, but it is not always realistic.

"Sometimes what we run into though is that kids just don't eat well." Kovan said. And no matter how many things we do right, they still want to run to McDonald's and get a burger because it's cheap and it fills them up."

The football players are given guides on what to eat and what to stay away from.
