Capital Area District Libraries Participates in March Is Reading Month

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - March is reading month, and this year Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) is celebrating with some great activities.

Reading month takes place in March in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2. This month is an opportunity to celebrate children’s books along with reading in general.

Kate Newcomb, Youth Services Librarian at the Haslett branch of CADL said, “March is reading month is a celebration of early literacy specifically. We have 13 branches in the Capital Area District Libraries system, so each branch chose a book series or author that they are highlighting.”

The Haslett branch chose to highlight Narwhal and Jelly, the Ben Clanton series and throughout the month the library will be doing Narwhal and Jelly book giveaways, book raffles, and arts and crafts.

Readers can visit the different branches of Capital Area District Libraries and see different book series and authors that each library chose.

Newcomb said, “If you go to all the other branches you can see they’ve got all their activities, they’ve got their own displays, I really feel like it’s cool because it kind of reflects the chosen flavor of every branch. It’s been fun to see who the other branches picked. ”

Early literacy and children’s books are an emphasized part of the celebration during March is Reading month.

Newcomb said, “It talks to kids about how early literacy is a part of your daily life. It’s not just sitting and reading a book. Everything is reading, you read all day long, everywhere you go.”

The library even has a library of things. You can check out things like a sewing machine, kids games and much more.

Newcomb said, “Read whatever you like. Do not get hung up on ‘I should read this’ or ‘I haven’t read this yet,’ read whatever is fun to you and brings you joy.”
