MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On Sunday, January 26th, Meridian Township hosted their 13th Annual Polar Bear 5K Run/Walk event.
There were a total of 277 people this year. Playmakers helped sponsor this event and was timed by the Michigan Running Foundation.
The race started at 10 am as runners and walkers made their way near the Central Park Drive and Marsh Road intersection and passed by scenic locations like Nancy Moore Park and Nemoke Trail.
This was Meridian Township's Recreation Specialist, Kayla Scelfo's, first time at the event and was excited to see everyone have a great time.
"I am looking forward to congratulating all the runners for being here today and hearing everybody's feedback on the event today, and we are looking for another great turnout for next year's event."
"This is something to keep families in the community active throughout the winter. We want something for families to be able to enjoy throughout the wintertime."
Members from the Okemos High School Action Club volunteered for the event. For Action Club member, Mitch Seward, who has volunteered for many other events, this was his first time helping out with this event.
"It's really fun to come here and volunteer with friends and they gave me a camera today so I can take pictures of people."
Participants finished right back at the Meridian Township Municipal Complex and gathered in the Town Hall Room for an awards ceremony and refreshments were provided. There were male and female winners from each age group ranging from 8 to 9 years and under to 75 and older.
