MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - It all started with a cup of coffee.
On Monday, August 26th, Meridian Township Police Chief Ken Plaga was on his way to grab a coffee at Quality Dairy. A call came in for an elderly woman that had driven off Grand River Avenue into Walden Pond.
Chief Plaga responded within 30 seconds and quickly took off his vest, shirt and boots and swam to the car.
With the assistance of Meridian Township Police Sergeant Ed Besonen, the two were able to open the car door and save the women from the sinking car.
Dive teams from Ingham County Sheriff's Officer were able to recover the vehicle from Walden Pond after two failed attempts.
When asked if he would call himself a hero, Chief Plaga replied, "I was just doing my job, any one of the men and women who work for the police department would have done the exact same thing."
Chief Plaga said that the crash is still under investigation, but the woman has been discharged from the hospital and is okay.
