What Does a Change of Location Mean for Meridian Township's Farmers' Market

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Farmers' Market started in 1974 with just 4 vendors. If you still visit the Farmers' Market today, you are probably aware of just how big the market has grown. More vendors are attracting more people. What does this mean for the market? More space needed?

"The only thing that hasn't really grown along with the market, is the parking. Parking was really one of our major needs,"said LuAnn Maisner, Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Director. The main reason for the new location seems to be parking issues. "Our residents deserve better than what we have," added Maisner.

At the current location, vendors had to set-up in the Meridian Historical Village due to a lack of space. As a result, the Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Meridian Mall to acquire a 2.5 acre parcel along Central Park Drive with a shared parking agreement.

With a new location comes a new name: Marketplace on the Green. "Here [at the future new location], covered vendor space and parking for visitors should no longer be an issue," stated Maisner.

Construction is set to begin this fall and the new structure should be complete in time for next summer's market.
