Michigan State Soccer lost to Ohio State, 2-1, in Big Ten Quarterfinals

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State soccer faced Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at DeMartin Stadium on November 5.

Under the heavy rain on Sunday afternoon, No.3 seed MSU Spartans strived to advance to the final four of the Big Ten Tournament in front of home crowd.

No. 6 seed Ohio State took advantage at earlier stage of the battle. Michael Prosuk took a low shot across the box at the 8th minute, giving OSU the lead.

At the end of the first half, The Buckeyes extended their lead. After a foul was called on Michigan State, Abdi Mohammed's free kick from 23 yards out went to the far post, giving OSU a 2-0 lead at the 42nd minute.

Earlier second half, Spartans focused on the offense and tried to strike early. John Freitag scored at the 50th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

Due in part to the amazing home crowd, Michigan State remained unbeaten in its last 18 home games before going to the tournament. The Spartans continued to attack over the final 40 minutes, but couldn't find the equalizer.

Michigan State's best chance came with only 31 seconds left. A foul was called on Ohio State. Junior Ryan Sierakowski took the free kick and hit the post, missing the best opportunity to tie the game.

"We didn't deal with some stuff early on," said MSU Men’s Soccer Head Coach Damon Rensing. "You can't drop down two goals in college soccer and think you are just going to come back from that. The second half we could have scored four goals and certainly could have tied it there, hitting the crossbar at the end. We gave them some goals off our mistakes and you do that and it's ultimately going to be tough to come back."

The final score remained at 2-1, Ohio State claiming the win to take on the winner of Indiana and Penn State at the semi-final.
