HASLETT, MI - The home opener didn't go quite as planned for the Vikings this week against Brandon High School. The Vikings were coming off their season opening 43-20 win versus Fowlerville and a Brandon HS team that had just lost their opener to Fenton 46-21. But it was not going to be a similar outcome this week for either team.

In the first, the Blackhawks took an opening drive all the way into the red zone when Haslett slipped under the receiver to intercept a pass only to then fumble the interception away and have the Blackhawks recover even closer to the end zone. The Blackhawks took this opportunity and went on to score the first points of the game making it 7-0. Haslett answered with a touchdown drive of their own tying the game 7-7 which capped the scoring for the first quarter.

In the second, BHS punched in a 4 yard run in for a touchdown to put them ahead 14-7. They scored another touchdown but missed the extra point making the score 20-7. It was looking like the Blackhawks had all the momentum going into the half. Haslett, though, came out strong defensively in the third and didn't allow BHS to score the rest of the game. They also found offensive success throughout the rest of the game rolling out the quarterback for passes. But two of the biggest ones were both called back on penalties. Haslett did manage to score another touchdown in the third making the score 20-14 BHS on a 20 yard pass setting up the possible comeback win in the fourth.

In the final 3 minutes in the fourth quarter, the Vikings had taken control of the game again and were on the doorstep of the end zone with the Vikings now poised to tie the game with a touchdown and go ahead with the extra point. But the Blackhawks rallied on fourth down to stuff the Vikings on a QB keeper on the 1 yard line and force the Vikings to give up the ball on downs. Haslett stuffed Brandon's offense once more to force a 3 and out punt but with under a minute and forty left on the clock couldn't recapture the rhythm of the last drive and fizzled out their last chances. The Blackhawks were able to wind down the final moments on the clock and secure the victory.

The Vikings head to St. Johns next week to play the 2-1 Redwings on Friday September 8th at 7pm.
